Sales Promotion - Empowering Australian Marketing Since the Gold Rush!

Sales Promotion triggers Gold Rush in the 1850’s

Did you know a Sales Promotion in the form of an incentive triggered the first Gold Rush to Victoria in the 1850’s?

Shortly after the colony of Victoria was established, the government realised that they were losing men in vast numbers to newly discovered goldfields in New South Wales. The mass exodus triggered an economic slump, so to encourage miners to stay, the Victorian Government responded with the offer of a reward of £200 to anyone finding gold within 200 miles of Melbourne.

The promotion worked wonders! Within six months, gold was discovered in Clunes, and then Ballarat, Castlemaine and Bendigo. Furthermore, the Victorian rush would dwarf the finds in New South Wales, accounting for more than a third of the world’s gold production in the 1850s.
