The Pitfalls of using AI in Sales Promotion

A handy tool…

Artificial Intelligence can be a handy tool when planning a Sales Promotion. It can assist with basic market research, generate ideas, draft rough copy and offer suggestions for general promotion mechanics.

However, when it comes to developing a strategy, launching and managing a dedicated brand Sales promotion in Australia, AI is only one part of the picture.

What AI doesn’t know is what you need to know…

AI can only work with pre-existing information it can access from the internet and its own databases. It doesn’t know a brand's confidential customer insights, commercial objectives, retailer relationships, competitive intelligence, previous campaign learnings or internal business constraints. These factors always play a critical role in determining whether a promotion succeeds.

Human experience

Without human experience, guidance, strategy, and compliance expertise, AI-generated campaigns can introduce significant risks. The most effective use of AI is as a tool that supports experienced marketers - not as a replacement for the market knowledge, creativity, originality and regulatory understanding required to develop and execute a successful Sales promotion.

AI draws information from public web content, forums, and other human-generated content that can be incorrect. It has no means to verify the integrity of the information itself. Leaning on AI to avoid pitfalls is much like leaving the promotion to someone with no experience who googles every answer! Inconsistencies need to be vetted to avoid costly confusion.

Legals and non-compliance

This is a high-risk area. AI can generate advertising and Terms and Conditions that

appear credible and professional at first glance but may contain inaccuracies, omissions or legal deficiencies. These errors can result in non-compliance with Australian state and territory trade promotion lottery requirements, privacy obligations and consumer law.

A warning to Promoters - AI can…

  • Omit important Terms and Conditions of Entry
  • Misstate eligibility and entry requirements
  • Generate misleading or unsubstantiated advertising claims
  • Overlook Australian state and territory regulatory requirements
  • Create inconsistencies between the advertised promotion, the Terms and Conditions and the way the campaign is actually administered.

A campaign can appear polished and professional while still exposing a business to significant legal, regulatory and reputational risk.

AI can assist with drafting advertising copy and promotional Terms and Conditions, but it cannot verify or provide up-to-date legal compliance. Nor can it replace professional input and review. AI itself is not guaranteed to be factually correct, leaving those approaching promotions without critical analysis wide open to being solely responsible for these inaccuracies.

Generic Creativity & Duplicity

Because AI is trained on existing content, campaigns can become generic and repetitive. They can even inadvertently resemble competitors' promotions! Certain AI models have a “look” to them and tend to come back to the same imagery, typefaces, layouts, etc.

In addition, AI works on what’s been done before; it cannot innovate.

This means brands can receive similar ideas and creative visuals because they are drawn from the same underlying (and often limited) online content.

In contrast, strong promotions are built on:

  • Customer psychology / insights
  • Data analytics / buying behaviour
  • Retailer objectives / unique selling proposition
  • Seasonal timing / geodemographics
  • Commercial strategy / sales tactics
  • Unique brand events

These are the areas where human Sales and Marketing expertise creates genuine differentiation.

Brand Erosion

Relying too heavily on AI tools is a major trap for brands - large and small. When everyone uses the same AI tools and algorithms, companies risk ending up with a generic look and feel. Great branding requires real originality and a human touch - things you instantly lose when you trade your unique voice for a quick, automated shortcut.

Strong, enduring brands have distinctive voices and visuals that should never be diluted for convenience.

Ignoring Commercial Objectives

AI-generated Sales Promotions will be largely designed to create “engagement” rather than deliver specific measurable business outcomes.

A successful promotion should clearly answer:

  • Are we increasing average basket size?
  • Driving repeat purchase?
  • Growing a database for loyalty programs and ongoing incentives?
  • Introducing a new product?
  • Rewarding high-value customers?
  • Clearing inventory?
  • Generating retailer support?

Without clear commercial objectives, activity does not necessarily translate into value.

Security & Fraud Risks

AI rarely accounts for practical fraud prevention. Experienced marketers know that technical safeguards must be overseen with human checks and balances.

Risks can include:

  • Duplicate entries
  • Automated bots
  • QR code abuse
  • Multiple account creation
  • Prize farming
  • Fake identities
  • Retailer fraud
  • Manipulation of instant-win mechanics

Modern promotion design requires technical safeguards as much as creative thinking.

Psychology

Successful promotions are grounded in behavioural drivers such as:

  • Instant gratification
  • Anticipation
  • Exclusivity
  • Scarcity
  • Collectability
  • Status
  • Gamification
  • Social sharing

AI can describe these concepts, but it often fails to combine them in a way that is commercially effective for a specific audience.

Overlooking the Online User Experience

As QR codes increasingly direct consumers to promotional microsites, delivering an intuitive user experience is essential.

Poorly designed AI-generated microsites dampen user experiences and often:

  • Require too many steps/barriers to enter a competition
  • Load slowly, especially when paired with inexperienced “vibe coding”
  • Request excessive information upfront
  • Lack of mobile optimisation
  • Create unnecessary frustration / negative PR

The QR code should be the beginning of a seamless customer journey - not a barrier to participation.

In Summary

When it comes to Sales Promotion, AI is a handy tool for brainstorming ideas and preliminary planning. But when it’s time to establish a legally compliant, commercially effective and engaging Sales Promotion, there is no substitute for human experience.
