The Power of Prizes in Sales Promotion

Want More Entries? Start with the Right Prizes.

Every marketer wants more entries, stronger engagement and better promotional results. After more than 30 years designing sales promotions, we know one thing for certain:

Sales promotions built around relevant prize pools are highly persuasive. They attract consumer attention, influence purchase decisions, and create stronger engagement at the point of purchase.

The challenge is not simply finding the biggest prize. It’s creating the right prize pool - one that connects with a target audience, creates excitement and gives consumers a reason to participate.

The prize pool is the consumer hook. It attracts attention, creates conversation and gives the entire campaign something worth talking about.

And a great prize pool doesn't just generate entries. It powers all marketing communication, providing compelling content for social media, email marketing, advertising mediums and in-store promotion.

The Right Mix of Prizes Drives Participation

While the major prize is often the initial attraction, consumer feedback and campaign results show that the more opportunities consumers have to win, the stronger the response can be.

However, this doesn't mean simply adding more prizes. It means creating the right balance.

A strong prize pool combines:

  • An aspirational major prize that captures attention and gives consumers a compelling reason to enter.
  • Regular weekly prizes that maintain momentum and keep the promotion front of mind.
  • Instant win opportunities that deliver immediate gratification and create excitement by giving consumers the chance to win straight away.
  • Smaller prizes that create additional chances to win and encourage more consumers to participate.

The most effective promotions make consumers think:

"I want to win that - and I have a genuine chance."

The combination of aspiration, frequency and instant gratification creates a prize pool that appeals to more consumers and drives stronger participation.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Across hundreds of promotions, one lesson continues to stand out:

Consumers respond to prizes that are relevant to their needs, aspirations and circumstances.

The right prize, combined with the right timing and a strong promotional mechanic, can create a powerful reason for consumers to purchase and participate.

Recent promotions managed by SAM Sales & Marketing demonstrate this clearly:

  • A 2-month national flavoured milk promotion featuring a $95,000 Ford Ranger, two electric dirt bikes and quality weekly prizes, e.g. power tool packs, generated 130,000+ entries. Despite having no daily prizes, the campaign delivered outstanding results, demonstrating the power of a highly aspirational major prize supported by quality secondary prizes.
  • A 1-month network promotion featuring a $48,000 vehicle or the option to take $30,000 cash generated 12,000+ entries. Interestingly, daily prizes were reduced in number from previous promotions, yet participation increased significantly because the major prize options created stronger consumer excitement and appeal.
  • A Win Free Fuel for a Year promotion with weekly draws generated 6,000+ entries during a 4-week period of elevated fuel prices driven by global uncertainty and rising household costs. Consumers were required to purchase two products to enter, creating both a compelling prize proposition and a strong sales driver. The prize directly addressed a current consumer concern, making the offer highly relevant.
  • A Christmas / New Year promotion offering $5,000 cash every week, supported by daily $100 cash prizes, generated 7,000+ entries over a two-month campaign. Consumers were required to purchase two products to enter, and the timing aligned with one of the biggest retail periods of the year, when cash-based prizes have strong appeal.

The lesson is clear:

The major prize creates the attraction. Multiple winning opportunities create confidence. Instant wins create excitement. A strong entry mechanic drives purchase, but relevance is what ultimately drives consumer response.

Prize Relevance Beats Prize Size

The best prize isn't always the most expensive prize. It is the prize your audience wants:

  • A tradie may dream of winning a new Ute.
  • Free fuel, groceries or household products may attract a family.
  • Younger consumers are often drawn to experiences - travel, adventure holidays and memorable experiences they can share with friends, e.g. concert tickets.

Understanding your audience is the key. The prize must fit the people you are trying to motivate.

Small Prizes Still Have a Role

Smaller prizes remain an important part of the mix.

They create more winners, provide regular campaign content and help brands stand out in competitive markets. They also reinforce the perception that consumers have a genuine chance of winning.

The key is balance. Smaller prizes should add excitement and participation opportunities while supporting a major prize that makes consumers stop and think:

"I want to win that."

The Trade Matters Too!

A strong trade sell-in program often supports the strongest consumer promotions.

Retailers, wholesalers and distributors play a critical role in bringing promotions to life. Trade incentives can encourage product displays, better staff engagement and greater promotional support throughout the sales channel.

When consumers and the trade both have a reason to participate, promotions deliver stronger commercial outcomes.

Promotions Should Build Momentum - Not Just Create a Moment

The most successful marketers and sales managers don't treat promotions as one-off events.

They use them as part of an ongoing promotional strategy designed to keep consumers engaged, encourage repeat purchase and create regular reasons to choose their brand.

The strongest promotional programs become a foundation for broader communication - not just a short-term competition.

They provide ongoing content for:

  • Social media
  • Email marketing
  • Digital advertising
  • Retailer communication
  • In-store activity

In today's environment, both trade partners and consumers are looking closely at the value they receive from every dollar spent. Promotions that provide genuine consumer value while supporting retailer and brand objectives are more important than ever.

A well-planned promotional calendar doesn't just create entries — it creates relationships, repeat purchases, and long-term brand engagement.

5 Point Prize Selection Checklist

Before finalising your next promotional prize pool, ask:

  1. Does the major prize create excitement?
Will consumers immediately understand its appeal and want the chance to win?
  2. Is the prize relevant to your target audience?
Does it reflect their lifestyle, interests and aspirations?
  3. Does the prize pool provide enough winning opportunities?
Have you created the right balance between major prizes, weekly prizes, instant wins and smaller prizes?
  4. Can the prizes support your marketing communication?
Will they provide strong content for social media, email marketing, advertising and in-store activity?
  5. Will the trade support the promotion?
Do retailers, wholesalers and distributors have a reason to actively promote it?

The Bottom Line

Great promotions start with great prizes. The right prize pool will:

  • Capture consumer attention
  • Drive participation
  • Create stronger marketing communication
  • Help brands stand out in competitive markets
  • Give consumers more reasons to engage
  • Encourage stronger trade support
  • Build ongoing brand engagement and repeat purchase

The right prize gets consumers interested. The right promotional program keeps them coming back.
